AIM-06-002-P · Primer — The Agent Loop

The idea in one sentence

The agent loop is the repeating cycle where an AI observes the state, reasons, takes a tool‑call action, observes the result, and continues until the goal is satisfied.

Why it exists

Think of a chef tasting a dish, adjusting seasoning, tasting again, and repeating until the flavor is just right; similarly, an agent iteratively refines its output. In real applications, without this loop the model would produce a single static answer that can’t incorporate new information. The loop solves the problem of dynamic, tool‑augmented reasoning where the environment changes with each action.

How it works

Each turn the model receives the original goal, a list of available tools, and the full history of prior actions and their results. It then decides either to invoke a tool—such as a web search or calculator—or to emit a final answer. The runtime executes the chosen tool, captures its output, and appends that result to the context for the next turn.

Worked example:

The loop terminates when the model outputs a final answer, a predefined stop condition triggers, or a safety limit like a max‑step count or timeout is reached, preventing runaway execution.

A variation is the hierarchical loop where a high‑level planner orchestrates sub‑loops for subtasks, each with its own tool set. Another related framework is the ReAct pattern, which interleaves reasoning traces with actions but follows the same core cycle.

The one gotcha

A common mistake is assuming the loop will stop on its own; without an explicit step or budget cap, a confused agent can repeat the same failing action indefinitely. In practice this shows up as the agent re‑issuing the same search query over and over, consuming time and cost. The fix is to enforce hard limits on steps, time, or monetary cost and to detect repeated actions, aborting the loop with a clear error message.

The one-line takeaway

The agent loop is the engine that lets AI agents adaptively act and think until they achieve their goal.

Where you'll meet it

Practitioners encounter the loop in platforms like LangChain or AutoGPT, where each iteration is logged and tool calls are orchestrated. During audits, reviewers check that step limits and safety guards are in place to prevent infinite loops.
