LEAD-01-001-P · Primer — The Delegation Shift
The idea in one sentence
The leap from prompt engineering to agents is the leap from talking to AI to delegating work to AI, and delegation to a machine demands the same disciplines as delegation to a person.
Why it exists
Every leader already knows how to delegate — you give a report a goal, the authority to act, the resources to do it, and a way to check the result. Agents make that same skill suddenly apply to software, because for the first time software can pursue a goal rather than execute a fixed instruction. The reason this bit opens the course is that the entire discipline of agentic AI is just delegation with a machine on the receiving end, and organizations that treat it as fancier prompting will misfire.
How it works
Prompting is a single turn: you ask, the model answers, you judge the answer. Delegation is a loop: you hand over an outcome you want, and the agent decides the steps, uses tools, and reports back. The bridge between the two is the CARE framework — Clarity on the goal, Authority to act, Resources to work with, and Evaluation to confirm the job was done. A CFO who delegates the monthly close to a controller does not dictate each keystroke; she names the outcome, grants system access, sets a deadline, and reviews the variance report. Delegating that same close to an agent requires the identical four things, just written as configuration instead of a conversation. The hard, recurring tension is that the more autonomy you grant, the more capable the agent becomes and the less predictable it is — so the craft is calibrating autonomy to the cost of being wrong. Talking to AI optimizes the answer; delegating to AI optimizes the outcome and the trust around it.

In practice
A private-equity firm stops using an LLM to draft summaries of target-company financials (talking) and instead delegates the full first-pass diligence workstream: the agent pulls the data room, computes the standard adjustments, flags anomalies, and produces a review-ready memo (delegating) — with a partner reviewing before anything reaches the investment committee.
The one thing to remember
Stop learning to talk to AI and start learning to delegate to it — the skill you already use to manage people is the skill agentic AI rewards.
